Rejoice for Being “In Christ”

Text: Philippians 4:4-6  “4Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Don’t worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.

Vs. 4 – Paul talks about practicing praise.  Paul advocates for maintaining a position of praise “in the Lord”.  It’s not so much about being grateful for the things you have but being totally fixated on rejoicing about the position we have in Christ.  To me “in Christ” means that we are no longer left alone, unprotected, and open to the consequences of our sin.  Instead, we are now found “in Christ” which means that he is our shelter!  We are able to run into Him and not be destroyed by the consequences of our sin.

Vs. 5 – The word “gentleness” in vs 5 in the Strong’s Concordance is explained in the following way:  Definitionseemly, equitable, yielding / Usagegentle, mild, forbearing, fair, reasonable, moderate.  Therefore, since Christ is within us–or maybe because He is coming soon–we should reflect a spirit of sensible fairness and gentleness.

Psalms 140:4Lord, shelter me from the power of the wicked.  Protect me from violent men, who plan to knock me over.”
