Back to the Basics

1 Timothy 1:5-7 “The aim of our charge is love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. Certain persons, by swerving from these, have wandered away into vain discussion, desiring to be teachers of the law, without understanding either what they are saying or the things about which they make confident assertions.”

You need 3 things in order to begin teaching others about Christ effectively:

  1. Pure Heart–See God not what the World offers (Matt. 5:8)
  2. Good conscience–Knowing that you are repentant of sin in your life daily.
  3. Sincere Faith–Truly submitted to the leadership of Jesus and loving the Lord with all of your heart, soul, mind, and strength.

Without these three things, Paul tells his spiritual son in the faith (Timothy), that people are teaching things that they think makes sense and are important, but are not neither accurate nor meaningful. Paul said that they distract people from the purpose of being a Christian–which is love.  Being a teacher of Jesus is not about showing how smart you are about information, it is about how to instruct others in walking in purity and love. We become Christians so that we can love God with all of our hearts and love others as we love ourselves.  If you nail the 3 points above, you can begin considering being a teacher of the Christian faith.

If these 3 attributes are not characteristic in your life, put them above doing ministry outward to others, until they become evident.
