Amazing Love

There is something about the love of Jesus Christ that we don’t really get.  The reason is that it is not possible to learn about it full with our intellects or our emotions.  The Holy Spirit has to fill us with it (Ephesians 3:16).  In order to truly demonstrate, and possess, the love of Jesus Christ which is more than simply doing good deeds for others, one MUST have faith in Him (Ephesians 3:17).  It is this intrinsic motivation, this external deposit from the Holy Spirit, that is unmerited and unattainable by human effort that will empower one’s life for dramatic service towards the Kingdom of God (Ephesians 3:19).

Without the faith, a person can do good deeds, read their Bible, learn about different apologetic strategies, and even pray for people.  There is something supernatural about the act of faith that opens the eyes of a person’s heart to see and feel the power of eternity, to comprehend that they have insight into the purpose and depth of the Creator of the universes.  It cannot be fully explained (Ephesians 3:8;18).

Much like I can tell you what you could expect when you are having your first child.  I can prepare you for it and teach you all about it and even how great it feels, but until you stand there and hold that child in your hands for the first time, you will not know the depth of that love–which is more than a feeling, more than knowledge.  It is a deep and unsearchable intrinsic love that you did not even know was there.

How do we get this gift of the Holy Spirit which is the mystery of God’s love?  Through submitting all of ourselves to the will of God.  By submitting our own wills to His and having faith in who Jesus is (Galatians 2:20).

Ephesians 3:16-19 says, “that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19 and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
